India will export onion in limited quantity to 6 countries of the world including Bangladesh

India has allowed the export of onions in limited quantities to 6 countries including Bangladesh. According to Indian media reports, onions will be exported at the government level (JTUG) to these countries. According to the news, the country's authorities have taken this decision on the recommendation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, the Indian media could not say anything about how many onions will be exported, or when they will be exported.

India will export onions to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bahrain, Bhutan and Nepal.

Bangladesh State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam told the media in Dhaka on Sunday that he expects onions and sugar to arrive from India before fasting. He said that the foreign minister got assurances in this regard during his visit to India. On Monday night, the Minister of State for Commerce said that India has decided to export onions to six countries at the government level - he learned this news from Indian media sources. After that he was informed by the Bangladesh Embassy in Delhi that they are trying to collect the documents of the government decision in this regard.

State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam also said that the Bangladesh government has already sent a letter to India expressing its interest in importing 50,000 tons of onions and 100,000 tons of sugar from India.

According to the Economic Times, India has not completely lifted the ban on onion exports. However, based on bilateral relations, the country will export onion in limited quantities. The news also said that the exact amount of onion to be exported by the Indian government is yet to be confirmed. The Economic Times could not say when this export process will start.

India's major exporters wrote to the government last Sunday saying that onion exports may be allowed in limited quantities due to increased supply in the local market. Onion prices have already come down from Rs 40 to Rs 13 per kg in Nashik area of Maharashtra, India. Ever since the export ban was imposed, farmers in one of the country's major onion producing areas have been protesting for its withdrawal. Nashik District Onion Traders Association also held several rounds of protest.

India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade has imposed a ban on onion exports from December 7 till March 31 this year. However, early last August, the Indian government imposed a 40 percent tariff on onion exports to maintain normal supply in the country's market. Then last October, the minimum export price of onion was set at 800 US dollars per ton. But as these measures were not very effective in increasing the supply of onion in the domestic market, the Indian government stopped the export of onion completely.

Immediately after the news of the ban, the price of onion in the Bangladesh market doubled overnight to over Tk 200 per kg. However, after the arrival of new onion, the market price has decreased slightly. However, since the onion season is over, the price of onion has started increasing again in the market for a few days. Traders say that after a few weeks, the price of this product will decrease when the new varieties of onions come to the market.

However, compared to last year, the price of onion in the market is quite high this time. According to today's market price report of the government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), domestic onions are being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 110 per kg in the Dhaka market. At this time last year, onions could be bought for Tk 30 to Tk 35 per kg. As a result, onion is being sold at 238 percent higher price in one year.

Babul Mia, a wholesale onion trader at Karwan Bazaar in the capital, said that the price of raw onion has increased slightly as the season is over. Importing onions from India would be better. Then no one can increase the price at will.
