Dhutra is a known plant of Bangladesh. This tree grows neglected in the forest thicket along the road in rural Bengal. Parents of young children are warned not to put any of these plants in their mouths as they are highly toxic! However, some people have trouble using it as a medicinal plant.

Recently such an incident happened in Char Kumaria area of Vedarganj upazila of Shariatpur. One family member suffered from allergies. Then a local advised to boil the leaves and eat them to cure allergies. According to that advice, three members of that family fell ill and were admitted to the hospital. And three children of the family vomit immediately after eating.

In view of this incident, it can be said that the Dhutra tree is poisonous. However, the leaves, fruits, seeds and roots of this plant are useful in various herbal treatments. Dhutra trees are food and shelter for various insects and wild animals. The contribution of this tree to our natural environment is not worth throwing away!

The scientific name of Datura is Datura Stramonium. Trees are like bushes. Dhotra flowers look very beautiful. Flowering begins in monsoons, flowers are seen on trees till Hemantkal. The flowers are held at the tips of the branches, they appear elongated. Dhutra fruits are round, with small spines.

The awareness of the new generation about Dhotragach is less. As humans we have to take care of this tree. Because, for humans, leaves, fruits and whole plants can produce dangerous poisons. Poultry, cows, goats, cattle can be poisoned by consuming large amounts of dhutra. If one chews fresh leaves or fruits, drinks the juice; But of course it can be toxic. Each plant contains different types of alkaloids and flavonoids. Many of our life-giving medicines are made from this ingredient. But these chemicals can kill us if we consume or use them directly.

What is in the leaves of dhotra, which produces so much toxicity? Fenugreek contains tropane alkaloids, which can cause poisoning. Dhutrapata contains chemicals called atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine. These elements are mixed in the human body by eating Dhutrapata. In some cases poisoning begins immediately, some later. Anticholinergic syndrome is caused by consumption of Dhutrapata. Dry mouth and throat, difficulty urinating, abdominal pain, blurred vision, fast heart rate and less sweating can cause restlessness throughout the body.

Accidental or careless ingestion of cloves should induce vomiting as soon as possible. His face and stomach should be cleaned. Get to a doctor or medical center immediately. Awareness should be raised that dhotra leaves should not be consumed by children or adults.
