Chapter 3
Punctuation: When speaking or writing we stop more or less according to the rules. The symbols used to indicate these stops are called punctuation marks. Apart from that, punctuation marks are also used to clarify the statement. For example: slash (.), comma (,), semicolon (;), question mark (?), exclamation mark (!) etc.

What does a punctuation mark do?

1. Beard (.): Beard denotes the end or completion of a sentence. Ex: They are playing cricket.

2. Comma (,): Comma is used for a short stop. Eg: Mango, Jam, Jackfruit ripen in the first month.

3. Semicolon (;): Semicolon is used between two related sentences. Ex: It is afternoon; let's go for a walk

4. Question mark (?): Question mark is used to ask something. For example: When did he come?

5. Exclamation marks (!): Exclamation marks sit at the end of various emotion words and emotional sentences. For example: Wow! You played really well!

6. Hyphen (-): A hyphen sits between a pair of words. For example: Human life is about good and bad.

7. Dash (—): A dash is placed between two sentences when some words of one sentence are mentioned in the next sentence. Eg: He is the good king-who always thinks of his subjects.

8. Colon (:): A colon precedes the instance. Eg: Two forms of communication: verbal communication and non-verbal communication.

9. Quotation marks (‘’): Quotation marks are placed when referring to someone directly. Eg: The teacher says, 'The earth is round'.
