Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or in October last year beating Arling Holland and Kylian Mbappe. Kevin De Bruina finished fourth and Rodri fifth. Rodri was instrumental in Sebar City winning the 'Treble'. His performance throughout the season was eye-catching. Performed regularly as per team requirements. Even the only goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan came from him.

However, as Rodri's name was not mentioned in the discussion of the Ballon d'Or, he did not get a place in the top three. In an interview Rodri talked about the award for personal excellence. Criticizing the award, Rodri said it involves marketing, money and advertising interests. Due to which the awards do not go to the deserving ones.
Asked about not being in the top three of the Ballon d'Or, Rodri said in an interview to the Daily Mirror, "I am not surprised." It's normal. Personally, I understand quite well how things work with this award. These are offered on the basis of marketing, finance and advertising.'

Pointing out that this has happened in the past, the Spanish star added, "There have been Spanish midfielders before, who didn't get the award despite being deserving. Do you understand what I'm saying (laughs)? What's important to me? What we're achieving collectively in football.
