Bali's sandy beaches and lush rainforests are world-renowned. Rows of palm trees as far as the eye can see. Beyond the head of the forest is the peak of the fire-mountain. Bali has thrived in tourism due to its eye-catching green nature. This island-province of Indonesia is called the honeymoon paradise. Apart from new couples, every year countless people come to visit nearby islands, including Bali, in groups or alone. But now foreign tourists coming to Bali have to pay extra money.

Starting February 14, the country's government began collecting an electronic tax (e-tax) of 150,000 rupiah (about $10) in Indonesian currency on foreign tourists. Before going to the island you have to visit the website called 'Love Bali' and pay the tax. This tax was announced last year. Now it has been implemented. Authorities said the tax was initially imposed to raise funds to preserve Bali's environment and culture. However, local tourists, diplomatic visa holders and citizens of ASEAN countries will be exempted from this tax.

According to official data, about 4.8 million tourists visited Bali from January to November last year. Before the corona pandemic, about 60 percent of Bali's annual GDP came from the tourism sector. A maximum of 100,000 Australian tourists visited Bali in November 2023. Next are tourists from India, China and Singapore.

Bali authorities in Indonesia are planning to ban motorbikes from foreign tourists in the province as well as tax them. Due to the lack of a developed public transportation system, foreign tourists in Bali often rent motorcycles to get around the island. However, they took this decision because many tourists were violating the traffic laws on the island.

It is believed that through these regulations, the country's provincial authorities want to prevent the influx of tourists. Because, in recent years, many irregularities, misdemeanors and misbehavior with local people have increased in Bali. In 2021, a video surfaced of a Russian couple meeting on Bali's sacred Mount Batur. The uproar started as soon as the matter came to light. However, the authorities claim that the new tariffs have been imposed to protect the island's environment and culture.
